This Techie Quit His Corporate Job & Has Been Living On Boat With Wife & Son For 14 Years

Every so often, you hear a story of some brave soul who, tired of their corporate lifestyle, quit it all and began anew somewhere close to nature. This is a similar story but with a watery twist. Brian Tautman thought that he would live a regular life as a techie in a city making enough money to live a comfortable life. But all of it changed and now, he has been living on a boat for 14 years and doesn’t see an end to it.

Just like millions of people before him, Trautman was leading a mundane life, first as a student of electrical engineering and then as an employee at Microsoft. He owned a boat which he took every now and then, whenever he got the time. Life on the boat was fun but he never thought any more of it than one does a hobby.

One day, while he was stuck in traffic, he looked out of the window and realised that he didn’t want this life. It dawned on him that he could actually start living on the boat and so, he started working towards this goal. By this time, he had quit Microsoft and had started his own business along with a partner.

At first, he only thought he would do this for a year and then return to his previous life. However, by the end of the fateful year, he knew that he couldn’t do it. And so he began his life at sea. As fate would have it, he even ended up meeting his future wife there!

Karin, who is Trautman’s wife now, gave birth to their daughter, Sierra. She, too, has been living the boat life since she was four months old. According to his interview recently published in Insider, their life hasn’t always been serene. There were times when intruders got aboard their vessel.

Now, however, they have developed enough safety measures to deal with these unpleasant intruders. And even after 14 years on the sea, they don’t see themselves back on land anytime soon! They make content about life on boats on YouTube in order to support their lifestyle. Feel free to check them out!
