Cathay Pacific is looking into the possibility of asking frequent fliers in business class to carry their cutlery. This news is released at a time when the airline industry is working to implement ecologically friendly sustainable strategies.

A poll has been distributed to a select group of frequent fliers by the Hong Kong-based airline via its Cathay Lab consumer network. It has over 10,000 customers worldwide. The survey included four statements that described four initiatives: bringing their own cutlery set, actively disposing of used plastic bottles in recycling bins, handing used plastic bottles to cabin crew during water bottle collection before landing, and bringing and refilling their water bottles during the flight.

When addressing these efforts, the majority of forum participants expressed a willingness to take part in almost all of them. However, other visitors stated that bringing their cutlery made no sense, recommending that the airline provide recyclable cutlery. It is worth mentioning that there is no evidence that Cathay Pacific is about to eliminate cutlery from its flights. However, it emphasises the airline’s pursuit of sustainable ideas.

In the realm of air travel, the soaring demand for flights has brought about an unintended consequence: an increase in cabin waste. From single-use plastics to leftover food trays, the environmental impact of airline waste is a pressing concern.

The Airline industry has come under fire from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for not doing enough to recycle and reuse cabin items. Beyond merely lowering carbon emissions, airlines are actively working to strengthen their sustainability initiatives and lessen their environmental impact. These attempts, which include reducing the amount of single-use plastic goods onboard and limiting cabin waste overall, have shown some encouraging results.

Addressing cabin waste is a strategic imperative for the airline industry. It requires a collective effort from all including passengers, airlines and industry partners.
