India’s Flying Taxi Is Here! e200X Can Carry Passengers, Cargo & Even Patients

India’s flying taxi goals have taken a major step forward. The ePlane Company, an IIT Madras-incubated startup, recently completed the assembly of its full-scale electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the e200X. Want to know more about it? Scroll down!

E200X Is All Assembled, Set To Seek DGCA Certificate

The completed prototype, which is designated PT-01, represents the move from years of design and simulation into physical testing. The aircraft will now go through comprehensive ground testing before progressing to flight trials and eventually requesting Type Certification from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The e200X has been designed as a multi-purpose airline that is capable of serving three different markets with a single airframe. It will serve as a passenger air taxi, urban cargo transportation and emergency air ambulance services.

The completion of a full-scale aircraft is considered to be one of the most significant milestones in aerospace development. It indicates that the plane can be produced at full size, validates the supply chain and establishes that all onboard systems can physically combine into a single structure.

The company has developed several major systems in-house, including the propellers, airframe structure, landing gear and battery pack. This approach gives ePlane greater control over performance, costs and future upgrades while reducing dependence on global suppliers.

E200X Undergoes Rigorous Testing Phase

The e200X will now undergo a rigorous testing phase in which engineers will subject the aircraft to aerodynamic and mechanical load tests using customised equipment at ePlane’s facilities. Additionally, flight testing will proceed before the company officially seeks certification.

The venture has collected approximately ₹180 crore so far, considerably lower than the funding consumed by many international eVTOL projects. Despite this, it has accomplished a milestone that has been reached by only a small number of companies worldwide.

Once approved, ePlane plans to start commercial operations across passengers, cargo and medical services before expanding into international markets through further regulatory approvals.
