Rail connectivity in Telangana is all set to improve significantly as the long-pending railway line expansion project between Dornakal Junction and Bhadrachalam Road (Kothagudem) has taken a step closer to reality. With the land acquisition process now finished, construction is expected to begin soon. Read on to know more.

Construction Of Telangana’s New Rail Line To Begin Soon

Currently, the route runs on a single railway line, requiring passenger, express and freight trains to share the same track. This often results in congestion, delays and slower train service. Once the doubling work is finished, trains will be able to run more smoothly, improving efficiency and easing freight movement across the region.

The project also involves a proposed 207.8-km railway linking Manuguru and Ramagundam via Manthani, Bhupalpally, Tadwai, Gopalraopet and Medaram. The new route is planned to reduce the distance between the two towns by nearly 90 km, cutting travel time and transportation costs.

Apart from enhancing passenger connectivity, the railway route is expected to change the transport infrastructure across the tribal districts of Mulugu, Peddapalli and Bhadradri Kothagudem. Multiple villages that presently lack rail access will be connected to the national railway network for the first time.

Key Benefits Of The New Rail Line

The project is also anticipated to assist thousands of pilgrims travelling to the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple in Bhadrachalam and tourists attending the Medaram Jatara, Asia’s biggest tribal festival.

The railway improvement is likely to strengthen industrial logistics as well by enabling faster movement of coal, minerals, fertilisers and other bulk cargo. It is expected to particularly improve coal transportation from Singareni Collieries to different parts of the country.

The Railways plans to complete the project in phases over the next five years. While the Railway Ministry will manage the Detailed Project Report (DPR), land acquisition and statutory approvals, the chosen private partner will be responsible for construction and funding. Tenders for the project are expected to be invited shortly.
