What Is ‘SheTravel Policy’, Himachal Pradesh’s Initiative To Raise Solo Women Travellers By 35%?

Himachal Pradesh is honestly a dream destination — think scenic views, delicious local food and beautiful culture all around. And guess what? More and more women are now choosing to explore this mountain state solo. To make sure their trip stays safe, smooth and stress-free, the state is working on a special “SheTravel Policy” designed to support and protect solo female travellers. Sounds like a solid move, right? Scroll down to know what’s changing!

Himachal Pradesh’s ‘SheTravel Policy’ For Women Travellers

The government wants to build a tourism system where women feel safe, respected and treated equally. As per Hindustan Times, they are planning to create a women-friendly environment across Himachal Pradesh so that travelling solo feels comfortable, not stressful. At present, women make up about 18% of solo travellers visiting the state. With the new policy, the government hopes to increase this number to 35% within three years.

Officials have already shared the draft with tourism stakeholders to gather suggestions and improve the plan before putting it into action. As part of the safety plan, the tourism department is creating a special section on Himachal’s official tourism website just for solo women travellers. This dedicated sub-portal will offer important information, safety details and helpful support in one place.

More Initiatives For Women Travellers

The government plans to check safety at more than 200 major tourist spots within one year. According to Hindustan Times, officials will review lighting, entry and exit points, CCTV coverage and overall security to make sure women feel safe. The state will also deploy trained female tourist safety marshals, called “SheGuards,” who will be present on the ground to assist and support women travellers. All registered hotels and stays must install CCTV cameras and panic buttons to improve security.

The draft policy will also certify women-friendly accommodations that meet proper safety standards. These hotels will receive official recognition. Himachal aims to become India’s first state to introduce a mandatory annual gender audit of tourism infrastructure. The policy also focuses on reducing tourist harassment and misleading practices. The Shimla Hotels and Tourism Stakeholders Association has welcomed the move and said that with more women travelling solo or in women-only groups, such steps are definitely needed.
