Why Are Air India’s Boeing 787 Aircraft Being Grounded? Here’s The Reason!

Recently, there have been several incidents involving Air India and its Boeing 787 aircraft. These incidents have raised serious concerns. To ensure that no such incidents occur in the future, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has now demanded urgent action from aviation authorities.

Air India Boeing 787 Aircraft Grounded

On Monday, Captain CS Randhawa, President of the Federation of Indian Pilots, called for immediate inspections of all Boeing 787 aircraft. As per NDTV, he warned that repeated electrical system issues could seriously affect flight safety. His statement came after an Air India Boeing 787-8 was grounded earlier in the day. A pilot had reported a possible defect in the aircraft’s fuel control switch.

Captain Randhawa said pilots had raised these concerns soon after the June 12 Air India crash near Ahmedabad. He stated that FIP had written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). According to him, electrical faults could cause fuel control switches to move on their own. He linked this risk to a possible malfunction of the Thrust Control Management Assembly.

Reason Of Electrical Failures

He also pointed out another major concern. According to NDTV, water can leak into the main electronic bay of the Boeing 787-8, which may cause electrical problems. For example, on June 12, 2025, an Air India flight from Vienna to Delhi had to stop on the ground because water had flooded its electronic bay. Passengers were safely taken off the plane to avoid any accidents.

Randhawa said a similar problem happened recently at Heathrow. While starting the engines, the left fuel control switch shut off after being moved to the run position. He again called for all Boeing 787 aircraft to be grounded and checked for electrical faults.

At the same time, Air India confirmed that one of its pilots had reported a possible defect in the fuel control switch. The airline immediately grounded the plane and informed the DGCA, India’s aviation regulator. Air India said it is working with the aircraft’s manufacturer to resolve the issue quickly. The airline also noted that it had already checked fuel control switches on all its Boeing 787s after DGCA instructions and found no problems.
