On May 21, 2026, Bengaluru witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that uprooted trees, brought down electric poles, and left many people stranded on the roads. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a yellow alert for the city till May 25, after which weather conditions may improve.

Bengaluru Witnesses Heavy Pre-Monsoon Rain & Thunderstorms


Bengaluru witnessed an intense pre-monsoon storm that wreaked havoc across the city. The continuous downpour uprooted trees and blocked key roads. Many people were left stranded as metro services were also disrupted. According to the India Meteorological Department, the city recorded 44.2 mm of rainfall till 8:30 pm. Karnataka Portfolio also posted visuals of disruption and waterlogging in Bengaluru on their X account. 

According to The New Indian Express, the rain brought down half a dozen trees across the city, resulting in traffic jams. Areas near Cubbon Park, Vijayanagar, Lalbagh, and KR Market reported heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the surrounding areas of Majestic and Mysuru Bank witnessed hailstorms. Due to heavy rain, officials were forced to shut the KR Circle Underpass, which led to even more traffic across the city.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert For The City Till May 25

According to The Times of India, what started as a bright sunny day in the city soon turned gloomy. On the evening of May 21, dark clouds covered the skyline before intense spells of rain swept across the city during peak traffic hours. The roads were flooded, too.

Bengaluru can expect more rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the coming days. IMD has now issued a yellow alert for the city till May 25. Weather conditions are expected to improve after May 26.
