India Issues Travel Advisory As Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Continue To Rise

Tensions are once again rising along the Thailand-Cambodia border, creating concern for travellers and neighbouring countries. The situation has escalated over the past few days, leading to artillery and rocket attacks between the two countries. To ensure the safety of travellers visiting these places, India has issued a travel advisory. Scroll down to know more!

India Issues Advisory Amid Thailand-Cambodia Border Tension

To ensure the safety of its citizens, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has advised travellers to stay alert and follow official Thai updates before heading to areas near the Thailand-Cambodia border. This comes after reports of artillery damage in parts of Surin province.

As per Hindustan Times, Thai authorities have clarified that travel across most of the country is operating normally. Only a few border areas have restrictions. Rail services to Ban Khlong Luek have been suspended, and buses to Kantharalak are now taking a different route. Travellers have also been asked to avoid Route 348 in Buri Ram for the time being.

However, it’s a relief that major tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Pattaya, and Ayutthaya remain open and continue to welcome visitors as usual.

UNESCO Expresses Concern

Releasing a statement on its X handle, UNESCO has expressed serious concern about the rising tension, especially near the Preah Vihear Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The organisation reminded both countries that they must protect cultural sites in all forms and reminded them of their responsibilities under international heritage laws, including the 1954 Hague Convention and 1972 World Heritage Convention. UNESCO also said that it is ready to provide help and emergency support once the situation becomes safer.

According to Hindustan Times, the latest clash began on December 10, when artillery and rocket attacks hit civilian areas. Both countries have had a long-standing border dispute dating back to the early 1900s, when France drew the original map, placing the Preah Vihear Temple inside Cambodia. The International Court of Justice ruled in Cambodia’s favour in 1962 and reaffirmed it in 2013, but clashes have continued over the surrounding areas.

We hope the situation gets under control soon!
