If you’re planning a trip to Nepal, things are about to get easier. If you usually prefer carrying cash while travelling, here’s some good news. Nepal is now allowing certain Indian currency notes. So, before planning your trip, here’s the major update you should know!
Nepal Now Allows Indian Notes
In a recent update, Nepal announced that Indian and Nepalese nationals can now carry ₹200 and the redesigned ₹500 Indian currency notes. As per NDTV, before this decision, following India’s 2016 demonetisation, only Indian currency notes of up to ₹100 were allowed in the country.
The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) reissued the notice on Thursday to explain the updated rules and clarify their implementation. However, these provisions had already been notified through the Nepal Gazette on February 11 after the required regulations were finalised. As per the new rules, travellers can carry ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued on or after November 9, 2016.

How Much Cash Can You Carry To Nepal?
A person visiting Nepal can carry up to ₹25,000 in Indian currency, and this limit remains unchanged from the earlier rule. But there’s a catch. NDTV reported that NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel clarified a few important conditions. Nepalese citizens can bring Indian currency into Nepal only if they are travelling from India. They cannot bring Indian currency from any other country. Similarly, they cannot carry Indian currency from Nepal to a third country unless they are travelling to India.
If you’re carrying foreign currency, you can bring up to USD 5,000 into Nepal without declaring it to customs. If you’re carrying more than that, you must announce. For Indian currency, travellers can carry an amount equivalent to up to USD 5,000 without a customs declaration only if the notes are in denominations of ₹100 or lower. If the amount exceeds the USD 5,000 limit, a customs declaration becomes mandatory.
