On Thursday, residents of Birmingham and Hednesford in Staffordshire witnessed something rare. The sky glowed in a mysterious pink hue, prompting thousands to share pictures on social media and wonder about the unusual phenomenon.

Well, the pink sky in Birmingham was all thanks to the LED lights at Birmingham City’s football ground. According to NDTV, the pink LED lights being used on the pitch of St Andrews stadium were scattered in a way that made it appear that the sky around had turned pink. Birmingham City Football Club even shared the photograph of the pink sky on X with a caption, “Pink sky at night, Blues delight.”

According to the BBC, simple pink LED lights were able to make the Birmingham sky appear pink because of the cloud cover and falling snow, as it made the sky more reflective. The report said that low clouds and snowfall can make the sky more reflective, picking up glows from streetlights, buildings, and even the purple lights of football stadiums.

As per Graham Madge, spokesman of the Met Office, light’s blue wavelengths scatter easily by snow or water droplets. This allows the longer wavelengths, like reds and pinks, to get through and scatter easily.
