Why Will An Indian City Rename Veg Biryani To Veg Pulao?

There are times when religious beliefs and food culture come together in discussion. This is happening again in Haridwar. Recently, in Haridwar a debate has started over certain food names like “veg biryani,” with suggestions that they should be renamed as “veg pulao.” Read on to know what’s happening.

Haridwar Debates Renaming Veg Biryani To Veg Pulao

In Haridwar, members of the Akhand Parshuram Akhada have started a campaign. During this campaign, they are asking street food vendors not to use the word “biryani” on their menus or signboards. Why? They believe Haridwar is a holy city and should reflect a completely vegetarian culture.

As per ANI, according to them, the word “biryani” is usually linked with non-vegetarian food, which they feel is not suitable for Haridwar. So, they have requested shopkeepers to use the name “veg pulao” instead of “veg biryani.” The members explained that this step is meant to protect the religious atmosphere of Haridwar.

Haridwar Is A Land Of Dharma

Bhagwatacharya Pandit Pawan Shastri also shared similar views. Talking with ANI, he said Haridwar is known worldwide as a religious city with a “sattvik” culture, which means a pure vegetarian tradition. He added that the word “biryani” often creates a non-vegetarian image in people’s minds. According to him, this does not match the spiritual dignity and values of Devbhoomi. He also said that shopkeepers have been requested to make this change in their menus and signboards, and it will not affect their business.

Pandit Adhir Kaushik, president of the Akhand Parshuram Akhada, supported the campaign and said they want to keep the pilgrimage site pure and sacred. Swami Kartikgiri Maharaj also said Haridwar is a religious place and added that the aim is to protect traditions, maintain spiritual identity, and spread awareness across shops.
