On Saturday, a 297-foot-long and 40-foot-wide Mexican Navy ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. According to the BBC, the ship was on a goodwill visit and had more than 200 people onboard. At least 22 people were injured and rushed to the nearest hospital for immediate medical assistance. The injuries were majorly sustained because many crew members were standing on the masts at the time of the collision.
As per reports, the ship lost power before the collision that happened around 9 PM (local time). The other people onboard were transported to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Videos and photos surfacing online show the towering masts of the Cuauhtémoc hitting the bridge as the naval vessel passed under the famous bridge on Saturday evening. Crowds nearby recorded how the masts snapped and collapsed as they crashed into the deck of the bridge.
While talking to the media, New York Mayor Eric Adams said no one fell into the water during the incident. Furthermore, the Brooklyn Bridge had not sustained any major damage. The New York Coast Guard also mentioned that while the ship lost the top of two masts, all personnel on the ship have been accounted for.

The Mexican Navy has confirmed that the ship was damaged after hitting the Brooklyn Bridge. They have announced that the incident was being investigated to understand what caused the collision. The New York police have urged people to avoid the area of Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport in Manhattan, and Dumbo in Brooklyn for now. They also took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that heavy traffic and a large presence of emergency vehicles in these areas are to be expected.
Reports suggest that the Mexican Navy vessel sailed for the first time in 1982.
