Kumaoni Holi is a unique and colourful festival with a special charm derived from its unique customs and traditions. A unique feature of this festival is the use of wooden sticks, or lathis, in a fictitious combat known as Thoda. This mock battle is particularly popular among siblings. It truly adds an element of playful competition to the festivities.

The essence of Kumaoni Holi lies in its musical extravaganza, which comprises three distinct forms: Baithki Holi/Bhaithak Holi, Khari Holi, and Mahila Holi.

1. Baithki Holi, also known as sitting Holi, is the oldest type of celebration; it used to last nearly two months but is now typically limited to five days. It entails musical assemblies, known as “baithaks,” at which tunes of different ragas are sung. The compositions are by esteemed poets like Surdas, Meera, Kabir, Tulsidas, and regional Kumaoni poets.

2. The energetic group dances of the villagers, who are mostly men, take place during Khari Holi (standing Holi). They move from house to house to the beat of traditional instruments like the hurka and dhol.

3. While Baithki Holi and Mahila Holi are similar, Mahila Holi is only for women who take part in Bhaglagana, a kind of relay singing that strengthens their bonds with one another.
