Veg Thali Rates Increase By 28% In July Alone; Why Are Its Prices Soaring?

In the past few months, the prices of food, especially vegetables and spices have skyrocketed. This has led to a spike in the price of veg thali. A recent report by Crisil, reveals the details about the rise in prices recently. It also revealed that veg thali rates have risen significantly, by 28 per cent in July alone. However, the cost of making non-vegetarian thalis have not risen comparably. But why is this so?

According to Crisil, the cost of making a vegetarian thali has increased by a third. It has increased by 28 per cent in July alone. However, the rise in price for a non-vegetarian thali has been relatively moderate. It has only increased by 11 per cent in the previous month.

For Crisil, a vegetarian thali constitutes of vegetables like potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and dal with rice, salad, curd and chapati. They also took into account the prices of spices like red chilli powder, cumin, turmeric, etc. For non-vegetarian food, they included the price of chicken instead of dal, as it is most common in non-vegetarian thalis.

Despite intervention from the government, the prices of these items have continued to rise. This rise in the prices of staples of vegetarian thali accounts for its skyrocketing prices.

According to Crisil, the major reason for the price rise is the surge in tomato prices. In its report, Crisil stated that of the 28 per cent rise in the price of vegetarian thalis, 22 per cent can be attributed to the rise in tomato prices.

In July, tomato prices surged by a whopping 233 per cent. Where they were sold at ₹30 per kg, they were being sold at ₹110 per kg. The prices of onions and potatoes have also contributed to the overall increase in veg thali price.

By comparison, the rate of broiler chickens fell by 3 to 5 per cent. Chicken accounts for more than half of the non-veg thali price and that’s why its rates have not increased as much as veg thali rates.
