Venice Becomes World’s 1st City To Introduce Day Tickets To Tourists As A Solution For Overtourism

For long, Venice has combated overtourism challenges. During peak season, around 1,20,000 people visit the city which houses just 55,000 permanent residents. Overtourism has made life for residents in Venice very challenging. Having to negotiate crowded lanes littered by tourists, canals clogged by cruise ships and witnessing the city’s fragile buildings being strained is quite a matter of concern. To tackle overtourism, Venice has now become the world’s first country to issue tickets for day trippers during their peak season.

A report by Hindustan Times informs that Venice has introduced daily tickets to day trippers visiting the old city centre between April 25 to July 14. The tickets for the same went on sale on Tuesday, January 16. Tourists visiting the old city centre between 8:30 am and 4 pm on Venice’s busiest days between April 25 to July 14 need to purchase the €5 tickets. The website to purchase the tickets went live on Tuesday in both Italian and English languages.

However, these tickets specifically target day trippers or day tourists. Residents or people born in the municipality don’t need to buy these tickets. They can just show their identity cards. This also applies to children ages below 154 years and close relatives of residents in Venice. This scheme which was approved last year doesn’t have any upper limit on the number of tourists permitted to visit the tourist destination. To make day tickets a reality, authorities debated for years and finally it got approved.
