Water Scarcity In Iran: Bowl-Shaped Concave Roof System Is A Unique Solution By Architects!

There are many countries that are facing water scarcity. Many of them fall in the African subcontinent, however, there are some even in the Middle East. As it happens, Iran is one of the many places on earth where there is a widespread scarcity of water, especially in the punishing summers. To combat this, BMDesign Studios created a Concave Room system that helps in water harvesting and passive cooling. Here’s how such curved roofs are proving to be a solution for the country, struggling with water scarcity.

It’s no secret that summers can be punishing in Iran, especially with their being water scarcity. However, BMDesign Studios, which designed Concave Roofs in the Kerman Province of Jiroft is certainly offering a great solution to combat this problem. According to Arch Daily, this infrastructure has been built in a way that it acts as a rainwater collection system. The best part is that since the roof is shaped like a huge bowl, it allows even minor quantities of water to make its way down the roof without evaporating. As a result, it efficiently harvests precipitation as rainwater and morning dew! An excellent example of this is a school with 923 square meters of roof area that is covered with the concave roof system, which ended up producing around 28 cubic metres of water for collection.

Moreover, the system also showcases different ways in which water can be engaged in the arid region. This includes plant salination, recycling water, harvesting precipitation, and passive cooling. Architects are today, coming up with new ways to combat the scarcity of water, as the world gradually moves towards a situation where the availability of water is under a lot of stress. And so, it’s no secret that this unique design by BMDesign Studios has been published and earned multiple awards.

What do you think about this innovative construction method that will help in combating water scarcity?
