What Is Literary Travel, The New Vacation Trend That’s Captivating Book & Travel Lovers?

Literary travel is the latest trend attracting the interest of book lovers around the world. Instead of choosing places based on movies or social media, travellers are now planning holidays inspired by their favourite books, authors and fictional settings. From visiting places featured in bestselling novels to joining book-themed tours, this growing trend is giving readers a new way to experience literature beyond its pages. Read on to know more.

What Is Literary Travel?

According to Skyscanner’s 2026 travel trends report, 55% of travellers have either planned or would consider taking a trip inspired by a book. Not only this, as per a report by The New York Times, vacation rental platform Vrbo has also identified the rise of “readaways” or book-inspired vacations where people travel to relax, read and socialise with fellow book enthusiasts.

Literary travel is defined as visiting places connected to books, authors or iconic fictional stories. This could mean discovering locations featured in novels, touring places where famous writers lived, or travelling to settings that inspired their favourite stories. Some travel firms are even developing travel plans based on bestselling books. For example, tourists can now visit Croatia using a tour inspired by Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation, based on places identified in the novel, while adding local experiences.

The trend is also increasing through hotels and customised experiences. Many accommodations now offer book clubs, in-house libraries, reading retreats and customised book selections for guests. Several hotels even provide surprise books or organise author meet-and-greets to boost the stay.

Why Are Book Lovers Choosing It?

For many readers, books create an emotional bond with places years before they visit them. Literary travel allows them to step into the worlds they have created while reading. Unlike usual sightseeing, these trips promote slower, more meaningful travel focused on culture, history and storytelling.

Travel businesses are also offering guided literary tours based on famous novels, while literary festivals across major cities such as Charleston, Santa Fe and Aspen are attracting readers with author talks, book discussions and specialised experiences.

As tourists more and more look for things to do rather than just tourist attractions, literary-based travel is growing up as a new way to combine reading, culture and travel, showing that sometimes the best journey begins with turning the first page of a book.
