Nikkei Cuisine: Its Origin & History
Nikkei cuisine is a beautiful confluence of Brazilian, Peruvian, and Japanese cuisines. Now, if you’re good at geography, you might understand why Peru and Brazil might have an intersecting cuisine, but how did Japanese cuisine enter this unlikely mix?
Well, the answer lies in history. Colonialism has played a major role in spawning culinary innovation. Due to colonialism, the invading nations discovered a plethora of spices and cultures which helped in developing cuisines.
Conversely, in the last century, a large number of the Japanese population migrated to South America, more specifically, Brazil for many reasons. This was the largest Japanese diaspora that the country ever saw and it took place in the previous century. Thus began the convergence of two unlikely cultures which spawned what we know today as Nikkei Cuisine.
