Indian Railways has announced an amendment to its advance train ticket booking reservation period, cutting it from 120 days to 60 days. This new rule will come into effect on November 1. But what prompted them to make this decision? Read on to find out!
What Is The ‘No Show’ Trend Observed By Indian Railways?
In a bid to cater to the needs of genuine passengers, Indian Railways has decided to reduce the advance reservation period for seats. According to a Moneycontrol report, this amendment is prompted by the ‘no show’ trend observed by the statutory body.
Reportedly, the authorities noticed that around 21% of reservations done between 61-120 day periods end up getting cancelled. Furthermore, about 5% of the passengers neither cancel nor undertake the journey on their confirmed reservations made during advance reservation period. This ‘no show’ trend has therefore fueled the Railways’ decision to reduce the advance booking period.
According to Moneycontrol, this decision will help the authorities to understand the genuine demand for rail travel in the country and also plan special trains during busy seasons like holidays and festive seasons. They believe this will help genuine travellers to book tickets easily as the availability of tickets will be clearer.

All About The New Train Ticket Reservation Rule
On October 17, Indian Railways announced their plan to reduce the advance reservation period of trains from 120 days to 60 days, effective November 1. They have also mentioned that all the bookings done till October 31 will remain intact. It is to be noted that there will be no change in reservation rules in the case of some daytime express trains like Taj Express and Gomti Express. There will also be no change in the 365-day time period booking for foreign tourists, as per the Railways circular. The advance reservation period for booking was increased from 60 days to 120 days in 2015.
