Why Are Fires Increasing In Mumbai? Seven Major Blazes Raise Heat And Safety Concerns

Mumbai has recently witnessed a concerning surge in fire-related incidents, with seven major fires reported across the city within a span of just two weeks. From commercial zones to residential buildings, the spate of blazes has disrupted daily life, endangered lives and raised serious questions about the city’s preparedness to handle such emergencies. With summer temperatures soaring and the city’s infrastructure struggling to cope, experts and officials are beginning to identify patterns behind the frequent outbreaks.

The sudden increase in fire incidents has coincided with a spike in temperatures across the city. As reported by The Indian Express, fire department officials have linked the rise in fire cases to the greater use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators during peak summer. These appliances put additional pressure on the electrical systems in buildings, many of which operate on outdated wiring. When this wiring becomes overloaded, the risk of short circuits increases, often resulting in fires.

Data from the Mumbai Fire Brigade supports this concern. According to the department, a significant percentage of recent fires stemmed from electrical faults. The load increase from uninterrupted appliance usage during summer months has emerged as a consistent factor in several of the recent incidents.

Mumbai’s Ageing Infrastructure Plays A Role

In addition to heat-related causes, the city’s ageing infrastructure appears to be a major contributor to the problem. As reported by The Indian Express, many of Mumbai’s older buildings are still fitted with outdated electrical systems not designed to handle today’s power demands. With no mandatory upgrades in place, these ageing systems continue to operate well past their intended lifespan.

Moreover, a lack of regular maintenance has allowed fire hazards to go unnoticed. In many cases, electrical panels are not routinely checked or serviced, allowing small faults to grow into serious risks. While new construction projects often follow updated safety norms, older structures remain vulnerable without timely audits and system upgrades.

Fire Safety Practices Need Reinforcement

The recurring nature of these incidents points to a need for stronger fire safety measures across the city. Preventive action can drastically reduce fire outbreaks, especially in older buildings. This includes regular electrical audits, modernisation of wiring, and installation of basic fire-fighting tools.

As reported by The Indian Express, Mumbai recorded the highest number of fire calls in four years in 2023, with over 4,700 incidents and multiple fatalities. A majority of those fires were attributed to electrical faults, reinforcing the importance of pre-emptive safety checks.

City officials now face mounting pressure to address the issue before it worsens. A proactive approach — involving residents, housing societies and civic bodies — is key to ensuring Mumbai’s infrastructure can withstand both the seasonal heat and growing power demands.
