Each Indian state holds its individuality and unique specialities through its traditions, culture, and heritage. Among vast festivities and events celebrated throughout the year, one of Karnataka’s most famous events held annually is Kambala. It is a nail-biting buffalo race conducted on muddy fields. Though it continues to occur every year, looks like Bengaluru will not organise Kambala in 2024. There are several uncertainties about the race and we are here to share its recent updates.
Will Bengaluru Witness Kambala On October 26?
PETA India filed a petition to completely prohibit hosting buffalo races in Bengaluru and several other places. The Karnataka government and the Dakshina Kannada Samithi took action to control the situation and ensured that Kambala would not be taking place on October 26, 2024, in the Karnataka capital.
According to an official report published by PETA India, the High Court of Karnataka’s bench issued an order for the State of Karnataka. The bench consisting of the Chief Justice and Justice KV Aravind officially asked the State of Karnataka to let PETA India know in advance if they came across requests for permits for more Kambala races in Bengaluru.
Informing them beforehand will help the court to know PETA India’s objections before the concerned departments approve permission to host the buffalo race in any location. The nonprofit organisation is taking all necessary action to stop places from hosting Kambala events. They have released a video showing heart-wrenching visuals of Kambala’s cruelty. These clips show how people use weapons to beat the buffaloes to keep them on the race tracks.
More About PETA India’s Actions
Media reports brought PETA India’s plea for urgent consideration of stopping Kambala events between 26 October 2024, and 19 April 2025, in Karnataka to attention. Bustling non-coastal locations like Bengaluru and Shivamogga have not traditionally conducted these races like several other locations.
The court will order the legality of hosting Kambala in Bengaluru or other areas that have not traditionally been organised. The court will consider it on November 5.
