South Africa will host the 96th edition of the Comrades Marathon on June 11, 2023. This marathon is revered as the largest, most prestigious, and oldest ultramarathon. Runners from across the globe have tried to complete this challenging run. About 2354 international runners are expected to participate in this marathon from 84 countries. With 404 athletes participating from India, the highest number of participants for the event are from India.

This year, about 404 athletes are participating from India, which is the maximum number. This impressive accomplishment fits right in with South African Tourism’s continuous initiatives to establish the nation as an Indian traveler’s first choice for adventure and sports tourism. 

The involvement of Indian competitors at the Comrades Marathon will highlight the relevance and attraction of this renowned competition on a worldwide scale. 

Notably, this year also commemorates the historic 30th anniversary of India and South Africa’s bilateral relations. The involvement of Indian runners in the Comrades Marathon serves as a monument to the deep link shared between the people of both countries as these two countries celebrate their enduring friendship and partnership.

The prestigious Comrades Marathon in South Africa spans about 88 km in the KwaZulu-Natal province between the towns of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. 

Over the years, thousands of runners from all over the world have participated in the race in an effort to finish the demanding course within the 12-hour deadline. The race is well-known for its beautiful but challenging terrain, which puts competitors’ physical and mental stamina to the test.

Ms. Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head, Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia, South African Tourism, congratulated India on its record-breaking participation. She also wished luck to each and every participant in a very sweet way by extending wishes from their homeland, India, and hosts, South Africa.
