World’s First Museum Dedicated To Sufi Art To Open In Paris Soon

The Chatou suburb of Paris will soon be the home to the world’s first museum dedicated to Sufi art and culture. The Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO (Museum of Sufi Art and Culture MTO) is all set to open on September 28 and it will be a delight for art and culture lovers. As per The Art Newspaper, the museum will showcase a unique blend of Sufi art, cultural artefacts, and contemporary work inspired by Sufi principles.

The building that houses the Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO (MACS MTO) is a recently restored 19th-century mansion that is located on the banks of the Seine River. Reportedly, the building underwent major work to adapt it to its new functions as a museum and public establishment.

One of the most interesting things about MACS MTO is that rather than exploring the rich contributions of Sufism under a historical lens, the museum aims to position this discipline within the ecosystem of contemporary art and culture. That’s why you will find various contemporary works inspired by Sufi principles here. The museum will show the “universality” of Sufism and its relevance to today’s issues with their artwork.

Collection To Feature Sufi Art, Cultural Artifacts & Contemporary Work

Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO features 600 sq m of exhibition space on three floors, a Sufi garden, and an archival research library. Basically, it will be a sanctuary for people who are interested in Sufism. The museum will have a permanent collection of Sufi art and cultural objects. They will also have biannual programme of contemporary exhibitions, lectures, events and workshops. This will help people explore the rich contributions of Sufism to art and culture around the world.

According to The Art Newspaper, the museum will run a programme placing contemporary art in dialogue with the collection. They will also hold exhibitions featuring work by seven contemporary artists. These exhibitions will take place after the inauguration and will feature work by artists like Younès Rahmoun and Pinaree Sanpitak.

As per the museum’s website, the permanent collection at the museum will be quite interesting. The collection will include kashkūls (Persian term for an alms bowl), a 20th-century khirqa (a purple and yellow velvet cloak with gold embroidery), sufi hats, musical instruments, and various other artefacts that are inspired by Sufi principles.
