World’s Largest Diya With 2247 Litres Capacity Inaugurated At Haridwar Kumbh Mela

Maha Kumbh Mela in Haridwar is one of the largest religious festivals in the world. Before the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic grappled the nation, the Kumbh Mela witnessed around 1 crore devotees. This year, there are around 6 lakh devotees bathing in the River Ganga and taking part in the religious proceedings despite the deadly second wave of coronavirus infections sweeping across the country. Kumbh Mela 2021 recorded over 1000 people testing positive for Covid in just 48 hours in the city of Haridwar. Yet, the mega public gathering event will continue till April 30, with no discussions to close it early on account of the coronavirus. Apart from the rising covid cases, Kumbh Mela has been on the news for one more reason. The world’s largest diya ( oil lamp) was inaugurated on Aastha Path during the mela in Uttarakhand.

Diya Recorded In Guinness Book Of World Records Lit During Kumbh

The world’s largest diya was inaugurated during the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Haridwar in Uttarakhand on April 13. Deepak Rawat, Kumbh Mela Officer lit the diya in the presence of other officials and devotees in the evening. This oil lamp or diya has the capacity to hold 2,247 litres of oil. It also created a world record and it’s named in the Guinness Book of World records. The official Twitter handle of Haridwar Mahakumbh 2021 stated this in a tweet.

Kumbh Mela Continues To Be Hotspot For Covid Infections

Meanwhile, around 6 lakh devotees turned up for the holy ‘Baisakhi snan’ in Haridwar. This is touted to be the largest of all four shahi snan and 11 snan of Kumbh Mela combined. According to News18, Inspector-general of Police, Haridwar Kumbh Mela, Sanjay Gunjyal stated to ANI, “Compared to 1.60 crore people who arrived here in 2010, as captured by satellite image, around 6 lakh people arrived this year for Baisakhi snan.” The Kumbh Mela continues to be a hotspot for covid infections in the country. Around 1000 people tested positive for Covid in just 48 hours. The event has attracted criticism and concern for the safety of people from experts.
