The North Indian v/s South Indian cuisine debate is as old as time in the country. But this time around, the debate isn’t about which food is better, rather it is about which region serves the other cuisine better! A user on X (formerly Twitter) recently posted that restaurants in South India make better North Indian food while North Indian restaurants aren’t too good at making South Indian grub. The tweet has since gone viral with hundreds of comments sparking a debate on this. Read on to know what both sides have to say.
“Restaurants In South India Make Better North Indian Food”
X (formerly Twitter) user @RaoSumukh recently tweeted about an observation regarding North Indian and South Indian restaurants that has sparked quite a debate online. In his tweet, he said he finds it amusing that “restaurants in South India are so much better at making North Indian food” as compared to “restaurants in North India making South Indian food.”
It's amusing how restaurants in South India are so much better at making North Indian food than restaurants in North India making South Indian food.

This tweet has divided opinion in the comments section. Here are some comments supporting his claim.
Good observation and the reason is south indian dishes are really hard to make than the north indian dishes

When I travelled to north i was amused to not find darshini kind QSRs for a quick bf! But in south any state we can find very good brkfst spots!

Completely agree 💯
in south India cooks are mostly from North east ,hence they prepare good North Indian food , while in North cooks are from North/North east hence we get not so good South Indian food— Poha Jalebi (@poha_met_jalebi) February 22, 2024
@RaoSumukh was met with a lot of support for his observation and people gave an insight on why they think it’s true as well.
What you say is right. The North is bad at making South Indian food .. They cant get the basic Idli and Sambhar right.
— Suresh Nair (@Suresh_Nair_23) February 23, 2024
I agree. I was surprised by how good some restaurant in Chennai served best North Indian food.
— LT (@bavaluefinder) February 22, 2024
Totally agree. Good South Indian food requires too much skill. Impossible for us North Indians to fathom! I detest what passes off as South indian in my city. Terrible.

Best managed restaurants in India (world?) are in Karnataka…
The hygiene, taste, efficiency, variety (options 4 breakfast & evening snacks) offered by Udupis/Darshinis are unmatched in the VFM tier!
Dhabas on highways outta Delhi maybe a close second!

Since no good debate is ever complete without an equally amazing counter, here’s what the other side had to say. Here are some comments about this whole North Indian food in South Indian states and the other way round.
Wrong. Northern food in Southern India sucks harder than a Dyson. Please visit northern India to expand your taste buds beyond faux mughaliya food, thank you
(PS : Rajasthan is occasionally left out, but I’ve retained it since Rajasthani cuisine here is equally tasteless pic.twitter.com/MPoKXCZGkW

omg you couldn’t be more wrong
— Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) February 22, 2024
sorry, its the other way round for me! At least here in Bangalore the South Indian food is underwhelming.
— Dev Singhal (@devSinghal) February 22, 2024
I agree that north Indian restaurants don’t make good south Indian but what you are saying isn’t true as well. Saying this after having lived & eaten in Bangalore, Hyderabad and even the rest of Andhra pradesh and telangana for over 5 years. Friends living in kerala say the same.

North makes excellent Idli, wada, sambher dosa etc.

The comments section even pointed out the reason why North Indian food is good in South Indian states these days.
Next time, have a look at the cooking staff. More often than not, they are from north. Opposite is not true for the restaurant in North.

Bro you havent tried the dosas at carnatic cafe, sagar ratna, ananda bhawan, sravana bhawan in delhi
— Munawar Alam (@munawaralamreal) February 22, 2024
Literally the exact opposite
You have many decent places for south indian food which tastes just as good, but very few in south which have good north Indian food
(Talking veg food here)
