According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, the Zoji La pass had been buried under snow for a total of 35 days. The BRO has now reopened it for vehicular traffic. The pass is an important connector for Ladakh.

As compared to last year when it had to be closed for a total of 65 days, this year the duration of the closure was reduced. This is a testament to the country’s increasing expertise in mountain road construction.

The Zoji La pass stretches across 439 kilometres and plays a crucial role in transporting supplies to the troops. It connects Leh to Srinagar and is at an altitude of 11,540 feet. During the winter season, it has to remain closed for around 160 to 180 days.

However, owing to the ongoing efforts of the authorities to improve border connectivity, the duration required for the closure has now been significantly reduced. This also helps the trade and commerce of the region as tradespeople can transport their goods to other areas.

Though Zoji La Pass has witnessed traffic disruptions from time to time, the authorities have taken swift action to resolve the problems.
