This means, there is a steep 63% drop in the mishandling rate with the passenger traffic rising by 111% from 2007 to 2023. However, there are still several challenges, which are being faced by the industry. Before we talk about those, it’s worth mentioning that SITA also revealed that two-thirds of the airlines now offer unassisted backdrops and 85% of the airports offer a self-service backdrop. This shows that the industry’s demand for self-service technology is growing. Not to mention, many passengers want to use their mobile phones as they travel. Thereby 32% of the passengers rely on the bag collection information, which is sent straight to their mobile.

Since airline data collection is important, there is still a major room for improvement according to the report. Only 58% of airlines share the data at the baggage collection and 66% of the airports share baggage delivery with airlines.

So, finally, it’s worth mentioning that AI for data analysis and computer vision tech are key for the smooth operation of automated baggage handling.
