I Took A Visa-Free Solo Trip To The Snowy Landscapes Of Kazakhstan; Here’s A Virtual Tour Of It For You!

Have you watched Borat Subsequent Moviefilm? It’s hilarious, isn’t it? But did you really believe that Kazakhstan was like how Borat portrayed it? Because it absolutely is not! I often use the words ‘natural beauty’ in my blogs while describing gorgeous places around the world. But my solo trip to Kazakhstan showed me what natural beauty really is! I have never seen a place more stunning than this Central Asian country. Its landscape is so unique! My camera probably didn’t do complete justice in capturing the splendour of the largest landlocked country in the world, but I will never forget what my eyes saw and my heart felt.

To be completely honest with you, I got scammed by a taxi driver soon after landing there. Solo travellers are anyway more susceptible to such incidents, I feel. But I would still say that Kazakhs are extremely nice people. Can you believe that, on the same day, a total stranger paid for my other taxi? How mystical is that!

Almaty was my base in Kazakhstan and I tried to explore the city and neighbouring regions as much as I could.

Let Me Virtually Take You Along On My Solo Trip To Kazakhstan

1. Walking Tour

The best way to see the beauty of Almaty is on foot. It was my first day in Kazakhstan and it snowed the entire time! Thankfully, I could still go for this walking tour despite the snowfall and discover the city’s enchanting sights and sounds. The enthralling walk through all the main attractions with a local guide let me dive into the depths of the rich history of the country. Some of the stops were Green Bazaar, The Abai Kunanbayev Memorial, Kok Tobe, Ascension Cathedral, Panfilov Street, House of the Government of the Soviet Kazakhstan, Hotel Kazakhstan, etc.

2. Shymbulak

I got to experience the mini Courchevel of Central Asia at Shymbulak! Located just outside of Almaty, this stunning mountain resort features snow-capped peaks, glistening slopes, and an unforgettable skiing experience. The breathtaking views of the Zailiysky Alatau Mountains add to the allure, making it a perfect backdrop for adrenaline junkies and adventurists. With its world-class facilities and well-groomed trails, this place attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the globe.

3. Medeu

Medeu is the world’s largest high-mountain skating rink. Unfortunately, it was closed at that time due to some ongoing renovation work. But if you love ice skating (like me), then this place is your best bet! Nestled amidst the majestic Tian Shan Mountains, it boasts a world-famous ice rink that stands at an altitude of 1,691 meters. This architectural marvel not only offers an exhilarating ice-skating experience but also treats you to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

4. Lake Kaindy

Finally, I walked on a frozen lake! Surrounded by the lush forest of the Tian Shan Mountains, Kaindy Lake showcases breathtaking scenery in the winter season. As the weather was still cold, the frozen lake displayed a unique sight of submerged trees, covered by snow. It is famous for the dead and bleached spruce trees sticking out of the water. These trees have not decayed and thus, impart a beautiful vision of an underwater forest.

5. Kolsai Lake

Located in southeastern Kazakhstan, this lake is a truly magical destination to visit in winter. The frozen lake is transformed into a picturesque wonderland, sparkling under the clear blue sky. The snow-dusted trees hanging over the frozen water add to the surreal winter fairytale ambiance. Walking on the frozen lake is strictly prohibited. However, you can climb the stairs to walk around it and see it from all angles. Despite the chilly weather, the winter landscapes of Kolsai Lake left me awestruck with its serene splendour.

6. Black Canyon

Black Canyon is a natural marvel that is incredibly stunning in its beauty. Carved over millions of years by the powerful forces of nature, the canyon offers a breathtaking display of jagged rock formations, towering cliffs, winding trails, and glistening streams. The colours of the canyon range from deep black, brown, and grey, and the play of light and shadow adds an element of mystique to the surroundings. The gorge and rock formations make it a perfect destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

7. Moon Canyon

It is a mesmerizing natural wonder that transported me to another world. With its lunar-like landscape and surreal beauty, it is no wonder why it has earned its celestial name. The canyon is characterized by its rugged terrain, along with the deep and narrow gorge. The beautiful rock formations and the contrasting shades of brown create an otherworldly ambiance. As the light changes throughout the day, the canyon takes on a different aura, casting long shadows and illuminating hidden corners.

8. Charyn Canyon

Have you ever walked inside a canyon? Well, you can do that at Charyn Canyon National Park, which is an awe-inspiring destination in the country. Resembling a smaller version of the famous Grand Canyon, the red rock formations are carved over centuries by the Charyn River here. The sheer magnitude of the canyon’s cliffs, reaching up to 300 meters, creates a mesmerizing sight. The best ways to make the most of your time here are hiking along its trails, camping under the starry sky, and exploring the majestic Valley of Castles. The place feels as if you are on Mars!

Here Are A Few Tips

1. No Visa!

Indian passport holders don’t need a visa to travel to Kazakhstan. All you need is your passport.

2. Money Matters

Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Moreover, you can also get your INR exchanged there into Kazakhstani Tenge easily.

3. How To Overcome Language Barriers

Download Google Translate on your phone as Kazakh and Russian are the widely spoken languages there. Most of the time, you will not find someone who understands English and thus, the app will come in handy.

4. Food Recommendations

If you are looking for delicious Indian food in Almaty, then I would recommend Spice Mantra (Tole Bi Street). In case you want to try the neo-nomad cuisine of Central Asia, then Auyl (Kerey-Zhanibek Khandar Street 586) would be a great choice as it offers original variations on the theme of Central Asian dishes. But if you are a vegetarian like me, you will not have many options there. I went there to get the feel of the authentic Kazakh vibes and I experienced beyond my expectations!

5. Shopping Recommendations

If you are looking to buy traditional Kazakh gifts in Almaty (clothes, art, rugs, souvenirs, etc.), then go to TsUM (Abylai Khan Ave 62). On the third floor, many shops are selling authentic Kazakh gifts. There are cinemas, restaurants, mobile shops, etc. as well in this mall.

6. What Kind Of Clothes Should You Carry?

If you are travelling to Kazakhstan in the winter season, brace yourself! I went there in February and witnessed heavy snow with temperatures as low as -30° Celsius! So make sure that you have enough warm clothes and wear multiple layers under a heavy jacket. Also, boots, a woollen cap, and gloves are a must here.

7. Any Safety Concerns?

Kazakhstan is generally a safe country, even for solo female travellers! The people there are helpful and friendly. You won’t face any trouble if you follow the usual safety rules.

Total Expenditure

I spent less than ₹35,000 on this trip. It includes airfare, day tours, stay, shopping, food, conveyance, and everything else.

1. Flight Fare

Delhi to Almaty: ₹3,500

I can’t provide the round-trip flight fare as I travelled to Uzbekistan after Kazakhstan.

2. Day Tours: Price And Duration

  • Almaty walking tour: ₹2,364 (3 hours)
  • Shymbulak and Medeu: ₹5,892 (8 hours)
  • Lakes and canyons tour: ₹3,995 (16 hours)
