It’s no secret that a lot of development is taking place in Riyadh. From new restaurants popping up to major shopping centres, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is getting a major facelift. And the Green Riyadh Project is one of the most ambitious projects in the nation. This urban forestation project is one of the four mega projects that have been launched by King Salman Bin Abdulaziz. And recently, it was revealed that work for this has already begun.

Construction Work Begins For Green Riyadh Project

Construction work has already begun for the Green Riyadh Project in Riyadh. It will comprise three major parks in the capital city, which will exceed an area of 5,50,000 m². Popping up in the neighbourhood of Rimal, Al-Munsiyah, and Al-Qadisiyah, it aims to make Riyadh one of the most livable cities in the world. With the cultivation of 10 billion trees within Saudi Arabia, it aims to achieve one of the goals of the Green Saudi initiative. Not to mention, the project aims to plant 7.5 million trees in the city, which is bound to increase vegetation cover to 9% of the city’s area.

It Will Feature Some Facilities

Talking about the project, it will contribute towards increasing the per capita share of green space. Not to mention, this project is also going to raise the total green space by planting trees around the city, and it will feature a bunch of facilities as well. Besides planting 7.5 million trees across the capital, the following are some of the facilities that will be included in this project –

  • 3,330 neighborhood gardens
  • 43 parks
  • 9,000 mosques
  • 6,000 schools
  • 2,000 car parking sites
  • 1,670 public facilities
  • 390 healthcare facilities
  • 64 universities and collages
  • 16,400 km of streets and roads
  • 1,100 km green belts along utility lines
  • 272 km valleys
  • 175,000 square km of empty land

72 Native Shade Plant Species Will Be Used

Coming to the trees, 72 native shade plant species that are compatible with the environment of Riyadh will be used for the project. Not to mention, a new water treatment network for irrigation will be developed, which will have a daily capacity of 10,00,000 m3. So, with the project complete, it is bound to reduce the ambient temperature by 2°C during summers and reduce the temperature by 8-15°C in the selected intensively afforested locations. It is expected to reduce dust concentration in the air and annual power consumption by 650 gigawatt/hour. Besides improving the urban landscape of your yard, it will also encourage citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, it will preserve natural zones while also improving biological diversity.

So, once the project is complete, it’s bound to improve the quality of life in Riyadh.
