The water shortage in Bengaluru is no news now. However, seeing how people in the city are still disregarding the issue by continuing to waste water is absolutely saddening. Earlier this month, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) decided to levy a fine of ₹5,000 from citizens who were observed to be wasting and misusing drinking water in Bengaluru. This move was to urge people to use drinking water from the Cauvery River economically. As per recent reports, the BWSSB has collected ₹1.10 lakhs from 22 families for misusing drinking water in just three days!
22 Families Fined For Misusing Water By BWSSB
The Bangalore Water Supply And Sewerage Board (BWSSB) had appealed to the people of Bengaluru to judiciously use drinking water, seeing the growing water shortage in the city. They had ordered people to stop using drinking water for non-essential activities. This included washing cars, building construction, gardening, fountains, and other entertainment purposes. BWSSB even imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on anyone seen disregarding this order and misusing water in Bengaluru. They even decided to charge an additional fine of ₹ 500 for repeated violations.
However, this did not stop people and the BWSSB was able to collect a fine of ₹1.10 lakh in just three days from 22 families in the city. They have, reportedly, collected fines from different areas of the city. The highest fines – ₹ 80,000 – were collected from the southern part of the city.

What The Authorities Have To Say About City’s Growing Water Woes
The BWSSB, on its part, has been urging people to use water wisely in the city. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has further emphasised that Bengaluru is facing a major challenge of water shortage. In a press conference recently, he highlighted that there is a shortage of about 500 million litres of water per day (MLD) against the requirement of 2,600 MLDs in the city. He further mentioned that around 1,470 MLD of water in the city is sourced from the Cauvery River. While about 650 MLD water comes from borewells. The authorities have not been able to come up with a solution to handle this massive crisis yet.
Water is a basic human need and seeing how people in Bengaluru are struggling to meet their water needs is truly heartbreaking. We really hope that the authorities are able to come up with a better and long-lasting solution to this growing problem in the city.
