After a one and a half decade-long wait for the railway station near Cochin International Airport, it seems that the sweet ending is nearly here. We say this because recently Southern Railway Manager RN Singh visited the proposed site. There he issued directions for cost estimate preparation and according to the revised estimate, this new railway station will be built at a cost of ₹19 crores. After the visit of the Southern Railway Manager, it was revealed that authorities are now planning to invite tenders. With the plans to complete the project within a year, this will be done once the blueprint has been approved. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that the idea of a railway station at Nedumbassery has been talked about since 2010. The foundation was laid during the tenure of E. Ahmed as the Union Minister. However, this project could never take off.

According to the updated blueprint, a new location for the station has been revealed, and this is near the solar farm under Cochin International Airport Limited. According to the plan, the platform will start just after the railway overbridge, which is on the Athani Junction-Airport Road. With two platforms, each of them is capable of accommodating 20 trains with up to 24 coaches will be constructed. And once this is complete, the station will serve as a service halt point, including two one-day Bharat Trains and other intercity trains.

It’s also worth mentioning that the proposed station is 1.5 km from the airport. If one takes the road that passes beneath the railway overbridge. In fact, the Cochin International Airport is also ready to operate electric buses that connect the new railway station to the airport.

So, if all of these things go as planned, you might just have the new railway station ready within a year after the blueprint has been approved.
