After Teen’s Death At Ras Al Khaimah Dam, Residents Want Safety Barriers Installed

What was meant to be an ordinary weekend in a mountain town in Ras Al Khaimah ended in tragedy. A 16-year-old boy, Rashid Juma Ali Al Mazrouei, drowned at Adhan Dam in the Al Aym area last weekend. Now, the grief across nearby towns is turning into a measure that might prevent future accidents.

Families Say The Risk Has Been There For Years

Residents living around the dam are asking authorities to install proper safety barriers around the water, saying this should not have taken a teenager’s death to become urgent. People from several nearby communities, including Al Aym, Adhan, Al Ghail, Wadi Kub, Al Ais, Wadi Al Tawyeen and Al Sarm, are calling for action.

Their request is pretty straightforward: put up fences or concrete barriers around the dams, as mentioned in Gulf Today.

For many locals, this is not a new concern. They say these dams attract children, visitors, hikers, farm workers and tourists almost every day, especially after rainfall, when the water levels rise, and the area becomes more visually appealing. But also more dangerous.

And right now, there is very little stopping anyone from getting too close.

Heavy Rains Have Changed The Situation

Residents say recent rainfall has made things worse. The water is deeper, and the edges can be slippery. In some places, the ground around the dam has become harder to judge, especially for children or visitors who do not know the area well.

That’s what has many families worried. One resident from nearby Al Ghail said the site has become a “double danger”, attractive enough to draw crowds but risky enough to turn deadly quickly. It’s not hard to see why people are alarmed.

The Dam Is Popular, But Safety Has Not Kept Up

Adhan Dam is well known in the southern part of the emirate. It’s one of the larger dams in the area and regularly attracts people looking for fresh air, scenery or a quiet outing.

That said, locals argue its popularity now demands better safety planning. More visitors should mean more protection, not less.

Residents want basic measures first: barriers, fencing, warning signs, maybe better monitoring too. Nothing complicated. Just enough to stop another family from going through this. Rashid was buried the following morning in Al Aym, with large crowds from surrounding towns attending his funeral.
