Amid Food Poisoning Concerns, Kerala To Launch Hygiene-Rating App For Eateries

Kerala is reeling under rampant food poisoning cases. Whether it’s in the Pathanamthitta district, where students and their parents fell ill after eating snacks at a school event. Or the case where 100 people faced food poisoning issues at a baptism. Following these incidents, Kerala’s food safety officials raided over 500 restaurants and suspended the licenses of 48 ones due to unhygienic spaces. Kerala Launches Hygiene-Rating App For Eateries

According to a report by The Federal, Kerala Health Minister Veena George stated that the state will soon launch a hygiene-rating system. The minister went on to tell that every eatery in the state must also follow the set-government instructions for operations. These instructions focus on hygiene maintenance, registration and license. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring these government guidelines are followed.

Keralites can expect special mobile hygiene-rating apps for eateries. Here, just like other food apps, customers can upload photos and videos of the food and ambience of the restaurant. This will give other customers an assurance that the outlet is a clean and hygienic place. Moreover, eateries without registration and license are forbidden to operate. Food safety officers will also carry out inspections even surprise inspections.

Mayonnaise Made Of Raw Eggs Banned

Many food poisoning cases in Kerala have been traced back to shawarma and mayonnaise. So, the government has banned mayonnaise made of raw eggs. So, only mayonnaise made of pasteurised eggs can be served along with shawarma and sandwiches. The best would be serving vegetarian mayonnaise. Also, eateries need to have stickers on parcels that state the time of cooking and time of consumption. Employees of restaurants also mandatorily must have a health card.
