Mira Road station in Mumbai is going under renovation. As part of the station refurbishment project, a platform escalator from Mira Road station was transferred 26 km to Mahim. This was a first-of-its-kind experiment on the Mumbai suburban railway. On Friday morning, the freshly built escalator at Mahim was officially opened. Here are the details of the escalator erected at the Mahim Station.
The Escalator At Mira Road Station Is Moved To Mahim Station
The Mira Road station is now undergoing an upgrade by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). It will include new escalators, an elevated deck, a wider platform, and wider and well-connected foot overbridges.
The escalator was taken apart, moved, and then put back together at Mahim station because it was blocking the construction. Mira Road station is one of the busiest stations and witnesses around 1.15 lakh visitors each day and serves over 550 suburban trains.

Station Work In Progress
According to an MRVC spokesperson, as part of the station upgrade work at Mira Road, new escalators have already been planned. The existing escalator on platform number 1 of Mahim station was erected on the north side of the platform because it was interfering with station renovation work (at Mira Road). This was the first time MRVC has moved an escalator on the Mumbai Division of Western Railway.
The renovation work will include widening platform number 1 from 6 metres to 10 metres. Also, the platform will have a 240-m-long and 10.50-m-wide deck. Authorities will also install five escalators and three lifts.
Other than that, there will be 10-m-wide and 65-m-long and 23-m-wide and 50-m-long FOBs. However, a 6-m-wide FOB will be dismantled. Besides, a station staff office, lounges and other offices are also being constructed.
The overall infrastructure and passenger experience stand to significantly improve as a result of the station’s refurbishment. By the end of December 2025, travellers may look forward to a more contemporary, effective, and comfortable railway station thanks to the hard efforts of MRVC and its committed personnel.
