Cyclone Ditwah: Red Alert Issued Across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Coasts; Heavy Rain Predicted

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several coastal districts as Cyclone Ditwah approaches, urging residents to stay vigilant and follow all safety guidelines.

Cyclone Ditwah Alert

The IMD has said that Cyclone Ditwah is moving north-northwest and is likely to travel along the coast of Sri Lanka before entering the Bay of Bengal. As it nears the Indian coast, people can expect heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to continue until December 1. The storm has strengthened in recent hours, and some districts may see extremely heavy rainfall.

Alerts In Many Areas

The IMD has issued red alerts for Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai on Friday, warning residents of very heavy rain and severe weather. On Saturday, the red alert will expand to include Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal. People in these areas are advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions.

According to The Indian Express, orange alerts have been issued for several districts, signalling the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. On Friday, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, and Karaikal may experience heavy rain. On Saturday, the alert will spread to Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chennai. By Sunday, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet are likely to remain under alert.

On November 28, southern Tamil Nadu will see light to moderate showers, while the northern parts and Puducherry may witness very heavy rain, especially in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai. On November 29, rain will impact several northern districts. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Puducherry. And on November 30, rainfall may reduce slightly but will still be strong in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and nearby areas. Light rain may continue on December 1.
