Archaeologists in London found a ‘unique’ Roman mausoleum that was thought to have served as a burial place for the wealthy. These unusual remains were discovered in the Liberty of Southwark in Borough, London. They are believed to have served as a burial site or mausoleum for the more affluent Roman citizens.

The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) believes the structure’s quality makes it the most intact Roman mausoleum to be ever found in the UK. The structure’s remnants have walls and floors that have been maintained.

The two levels of the site, which have a magnificent core mosaic, are still present, and the first floor also has a mosaic identical to this one. Additionally, raised platforms were discovered, and the bottom-level steps are still in good condition. Due to the raised floor, excavators think the building may have undergone some modification in the past. Though no signs of coffins were discovered at the site, more than 100 coins, roofing tiles, metal, and ceramic fragments were.

MOLA started excavation work on behalf of Landsec and Transport for London (TfL). According to them, work on establishing a permanent display has now begun. It is envisaged that urban expansion would coexist with the preservation of the land. The largest Roman mosaic to be found in London in more than 50 years was found there last year.

The largest mosaic panel dates to the late 2nd to early 3rd century AD. It was situated outside of Roman Londinium, which is roughly equivalent to the present-day City of London and was concentrated on the north bank of the Thames.

A representative for MOLA noted that the room it was in may have been a part of a Roman mansion, an upscale “motel” for state couriers.
