Did You Know An Entire Australian Town Lives Underground?

Across the world, people come up with different ways to beat the heat. But one Australian town took things to another level. When you visit this place, you’ll notice that instead of building homes, shops, cafes, and other structures above the ground, the residents of Coober Pedy created an entire community beneath it. Read on to know more!

Coober Pedy Built An Entire Community Underground

Located in a remote part of South Australia, Coober Pedy is a small town which at first glance may look like a dry and empty desert town. However, the real surprise lies underground. Here, many homes, shops, cafes, and even churches are built underground inside the rock.

Why? As per BBC, the heat here often rises above 52°C, and so many people in Coober Pedy live in underground homes, which they call “dugouts.” Opal miners first carved these spaces into the rock, but the residents later turned them into homes. They did it because the underground setting naturally stays cool in summer and warm in winter.

Life Inside Dugout Is Comfortable

Life inside these underground homes is surprisingly comfortable. The thick rock walls keep the temperature pleasant throughout the year, so residents don’t have to worry much about the harsh climate outside. Many visitors say stepping into these homes feels like entering a hidden underground city, similar to the famous caves of Cappadocia in Turkey.

Hindustan Times reported that about 60% of Coober Pedy’s residents live underground. From above, the town looks quiet, with only a few ventilation pipes and entrances visible on the surface. Tourists can also stay in these unique underground homes through Airbnb. Starting at around ₹12,000 per night, these cave-style stays offer modern comforts like Wi-Fi, kitchens, laundry facilities, and even luxury features such as jacuzzis and stargazing decks.
