Bangalore Man Sells Off House To Feed Stray Dogs

Are you a dog person? Then here’s a beautiful story that will touch your heart for sure. Software engineer and owner of a Bangalore-based company, Rakesh Shukla, has sold all his precious possessions, including two houses and two cars, with one prime intention-to take care of the numerous abandoned stray dogs. He has set up a non-profit organisation called The Voice of Stray Dogs or VOSD, which is now home to about 900 rescued dogs. Scroll down to know the entire story.

How Did It Start?

Shukla had started his career in Software Engineering in Delhi and then he had moved to America. After returning to India, he had set up his own company in Bangalore, which is now about 14 years old. In 2009, he brought home a 45-day-old Golden Retriever. One day, when Shukla was strolling around with his new puppy, he spotted another little stray dog who was all drenched in the rain. Looking at it, Shukla’s heart melted. He immediately rescued it and named it ‘Lucky’. Soon after, he saved 14 more dogs and with time, the number increased. That’s when VOSD came into existence. It was set up about six years ago and till date, has rescued more than 8000 dogs, provided treatments to about 200,000 and made stay facilities for about 900. Shukla has a team of 25 who are always ready to help the dogs in every way possible. VOSD has also established a canine blood bank.

What Else?

There are several brands under VOSD that employ creative measures to assist the pooches. For example, the brand Art for Dogs sells themed artworks by leading visual artists to raise funds for the dogs. Shukla has not only sold his own belongings, he even started a crowdfunding campaign on Ketto to generate as much cash as possible to do the best for his barking kids. Apart from being an entrepreneur, Shukla has dedicated his life in nourishing these doggos, and in that way, found real happiness.
