Most chefs provide us with various recipes to try at home, but Chef Ranveer Brar takes it up a notch by diving deep into storytelling. Not only does he share must-try recipes, but he also reveals the history and significance of every dish, along with the special ingredients he uses. In the latest episode of Sunday Brunch, he visited Shifku by Curly Tales to meet our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani. This was no ordinary Sunday Brunch episode; it was special because we didn’t just chat with the chef—we also learnt how to make sushi! If you want to learn how to make sushi at home, watch the full video on the Curly Tales YouTube channel.
Chef Ranveer Brar Is A Man Of Many Talents
As soon as Chef Ranveer Brar stepped into the restaurant, he got straight to work, teaching us how to make three kinds of sushi—all of which turned out great! He shared intricate details about the ingredients he used and even opened up about himself. He revealed that his comfort food is khichdi, a dish many of us enjoy when we’re sick. Interestingly, he admitted there isn’t a dish he cooks that he truly loves, jokingly adding that he enjoys his wife’s cooking more.
While slicing his final sushi into pieces, Chef Ranveer explained the proper technique: using a seesaw motion, similar to how a carpenter cuts wood, to ensure the sushi maintains its shape. Kamiya Jani added that Chef Ranveer doesn’t just wear different hats as a chef but also as a poet, storyteller, singer, and actor.
Surprisingly, he revealed that cooking wasn’t his first passion. Initially, he was drawn to writing, followed by painting and sculpting, before finally discovering his love for cooking. Later in life, he even developed an interest in acting and found it to be another field he wanted to explore.

He Never Envisioned Such Popularity
Given Chef Ranveer Brar’s success across so many domains, Kamiya Jani asked if his efforts stemmed from a desire to be popular and recognised worldwide. Surprisingly, Chef Ranveer shared that this wasn’t the case for him. In fact, he sometimes feels as though he’s taken someone else’s place. He explained that, while many people share in interviews that they’ve always manifested their success and popularity, he never imagined or even wanted such fame. Yet, it happened.
Later in the episode, the chef revealed how deeply his grandmother influenced his cooking. To learn all about it, tune in to the full video on the Curly Tales YouTube channel!
