Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has installed baby feeding centres across several metro stations in the city to offer nursing mothers a safe and private space. This new initiative comes at a time when women are demanding feeding rooms in public spaces for their and their children’s needs. Taking a cue, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has collaborated with several NGOs and State Bank of India (SBI) for this initiative.
Baby Feeding Centres In Bengaluru Metro Stations Offer Safe Space For Nursing Mothers
As per a report by Deccan Herald, Baiyappanhalli Metro Station in Bengaluru now has a Baby Feeding Centre. This was established by BMRCL in partnership with Child Help Foundation and the Sibdi Swavalamban Foundation. By setting up baby feeding centres, BMRCL addresses challenges women often face in finding private and safe spaces to feed their babies. The State Bank of India’s corporate social responsibility has funded these centres.

Several mothers reported to Deccan Herald that these centres at Bengaluru’s metro stations offer a spacious, well-maintained and clean environment. Here, they can feed their babies in privacy. Apart from the Baiyappanhalli Metro Station, women can find baby feeding centres in four other metro stations, including Yelachenahalli, Kengeri, Yeshwantpur and Majestic, an important junction in the Namma Metro line.
Majestic Metro Station is a significant junction to change to the Green and Purple metro lines. By having a baby feeding centre here, nursing mothers have an option to take rest and replenish their babies before the end of their metro journey. A metro official revealed that the baby feeding centres that BMRCL manages these baby feeding centres.

This Initiative Can Expand
Moreover, when asked for a reason why this facility isn’t available at other stations in Bengaluru, here’s what he said. The official informed that the cost of running the centres needs to be ascertained first before expanding them to other stations. Currently, the centres at Majestic, Baiyappanhalli, Yelachenahalli, Kengeri and Yeshwantpur stations span an 8×8 room. The broad benches in the room can accommodate up to four mothers.

If tired, the mothers can also sleep on these benches. The official ended with a respite, stating that if mothers can’t find a feeding centre in a station, they can contact customer care. They will be taken to a private space to nurse their babies.
