Friday marked more than just a ceremonial flag-off; it was a recalibration of Indian Railways’ priorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated four new Amrit Bharat Express trains, tailored to meet the mobility needs of lower and lower-middle-income groups across Bihar and nearby states. Manufactured by Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF), they’re designed to be affordable, functional and high-quality.

The Amrit Bharat Express is built for the 80% Indians who rely on trains as their primary mode of long-distance travel. In a space often defined by compromises, this initiative is a rare upgrade. The Amrit Bharat Express is all set to deliver on key passenger needs: improved seating, cleaner toilets, better ventilation, and smart design tweaks that ease long journeys without inflating costs.

Here’s all you need to know about these four new routes –
- The Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi route starts daily service from 31st July (Patna) and 1st August (Delhi), under train numbers 22361 and 22362. It’s an overnight route, and touches essential stops like Danapur, Buxar, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, Govindpuri, and Ghaziabad. If you live in Bihar and visit Delhi often, your options just got simpler!
- Next is the Darbhanga-Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) route, kicking off weekly runs from 26th and 27th July under train numbers 15561 and 15562. This route is all ready to stitch together Sitamarhi, Raxaul, Gorakhpur, and Ayodhya into a clean, reliable corridor that had been missing from the map until now.
- The Malda Town-Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) train, operating weekly from 24th July, fills a gap in the East-to-Central India connection. With critical junctions like Bhagalpur, Gaya, Varanasi, and Jaunpur on its path, this route opens up smoother access for families, students, and traders in those areas.
- Then there’s the Bapudham Motihari-Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal) service. Its inaugural special (Train No. 05599) is all ready, and regular operations are now imminent. Once running, it offers a rare direct connection from north Bihar’s key stations of Sagauli, Bettiah, Narkatiaganj, Gorakhpur, and Bareilly straight into the capital without the usual roundabout pain.
Indian Railway’s Pivotal Move
These trains may not offer premium luxuries, but they deliver something far more meaningful: accessibility, reliability, and a quiet dignity often missing in public transport. The Indian Railways, through this move, appears to be prioritising mobility as inclusion. These Amrit Bharat routes speak directly to the reality on the ground, and in doing so, they elevate it.
