BMC Installs 481 Dewatering Pumps Across Mumbai To Gear Up For Monsoon; But Will It Really Help?

If you or someone you know has lived in Mumbai during the monsoon season, you know that waterlogging is a huge issue here. Every year there are a couple of days when the entire city is forced to a halt because various areas or train tracks are too water-logged to be operational. This year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC has started gearing up for the monsoon season by installing dewatering pumps across the city.

According to an article which was recently published by Times Now, a total of 481 dewatering pumps will be installed across the city. Out of these, 187 will be installed in the city. The rest of the 166 will be installed in the Western Suburbs.

These dewatering pumps will have a high drainage capacity. This means that when the city is waterlogged, it can effectively drain water. If reports are to go by, each pump will be operated by a helper and an operator.

Ward-level civic engineers will oversee the operations of the pump. This initiative is undertaken keeping in mind that low-lying areas in Mumbai get waterlogged whenever there is a high tide and it rains more than 55mm.

Will These Pumps Help In Such A Situation?

One of the major reasons why Mumbai gets waterlogged so easily is concretisation. Other cities have sufficient green cover which allows rainwater to be absorbed into the ground which prevents waterlogging.

However, owing to the large-scale concretisation in Mumbai, water is unable to percolate. The drainage system of the city also gets overburdened. These factors combined make Mumbai prone to waterlogging.

Dewatering pumps in such a situation may be slightly helpful but they are not a long-term solution. At best, it is a band-aid on a gunshot wound. What Mumbai needs is more green areas and a decrease in concretisation in the long run.
