Kolkata Metro has multiple ongoing construction projects right now. One of the much-awaited projects is the route connecting to the bustling Kolkata airport. At the present moment, there is no operational direct metro route that can take passengers directly to or near Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Looks like this is about to change as Kolkata Metro is now planning to initiate the services to the airport soon, by this year itself.
How Will Commuters Head To The Kolkata Airport By Metro?
The Kolkata Metro Line 6, also known as the Orange Line, is now operational. Passengers can commute between New Garia and Ruby swiftly. Well, the good news here is that the metro railway officials are now eyeing to start operations of the Airport-Haldiram segment by the end of 2024, according to a report by The Times of India. The 2.4-km Airport-Haldiram segment is a part of the New Garia-Airport stretch of the Orange Line.
P. Uday Kumar Reddy, the Metro Railway General Manager, shared some updates about the route connecting with Kolkata airport. The Orange Line will start services from both ends and not just from the New Garia end. The General Manager has not provided any information about the exact or even anticipated time to start operations on this route. On the other hand, some sources revealed that Metro Railway plans to initiate by the end of 2024 itself.
Along with the plans for the Airport-Haldiram segment, looks like the Noapara-Airport section will also start providing services within this timeline. In conversation with The Times of India, Mr. Reddy also added that rakes can be taken from the Noapara depot for the Airport station and it will have Blue Line and Yellow Line.
