FDA Shuts Down Celeb-Favourite Suraj Lama Momos In Mumbai
According to NDTV Profit, the FDA has suspended the licences of five establishments and cancelled the licences of three others after inspections found violations related to food safety, hygiene and handling standards. Suraj Lama Momos is among the establishments whose licence has been suspended.
The action comes as the FDA, under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, steps up inspections across Maharashtra during the festive season. According to the regulator, inspections at the Mumbai establishments found lapses in food handling and storage, along with shortcomings in sanitation, cleanliness and measures meant to prevent contamination.
Suraj Lama Momos has built a strong following in Mumbai and is known for its celebrity clientele. The Andheri West outlet has frequently featured in social media posts and food recommendations, making the FDA action particularly notable for regular customers.
FDA Steps Up Festive Food Safety Checks
Other Mumbai establishments facing action include Cafe Sultan in Kalina, Lo Fresh Food in Marol, Country Club in Andheri West, and Cafe Pakeezah in Santacruz West. The licences of Blinkit in Vile Parle, Copenhagen Hospitality in Vile Parle and Eatclub in Bandra West were cancelled, according to the FDA’s October 5 press note.
The wider crackdown was carried out across Maharashtra between October 1 and 5. In the Konkan division, six establishments were inspected, and prohibited food stock worth ₹2.18 crore was seized. The operation also led to six FIRs, 14 arrests, the sealing of two establishments and the seizure of four vehicles worth ₹67 lakh.
In Pune and Nashik, the FDA also seized prohibited food items and registered multiple FIRs. Across the wider festive-season drive, 30,472 kg of food stock and 1,238 packets worth ₹50.69 lakh were seized. The FDA said it will continue taking strict action against establishments involved in the manufacture, storage, transport or sale of unsafe, adulterated, substandard, expired or prohibited food products.
