You can never run out of reasons to visit Srinagar! From the pristine Dal Lake, where you can embark on romantic shikhara rides, the snowcapped mountains, and the famous tulip garden to the soulful Kashmiri meals —Srinagar is truly heaven on earth. Soon, you’ll have another reason to visit Srinagar. Hint: it’s pink! Srinagar will soon welcome a beautiful cherry blossom-themed garden inspired by Japanese Sakura flowers. Here’s all about it.

Srinagar To be Bathed In Pink With New Cherry Blossom Garden

On March 1, the Floriculture Department Kashmir held a virtual meeting with the Ministry of External Affairs Government of India and the Japanese authorities. The meeting was all about bringing cherry blossoms to Srinagar. Facilitated by the Ministry of External Affairs, this project aims to create a cherry blossom extension to the massive tulip garden of the destination.

Commissioner Secretary Floriculture Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad revealed to The Greater Kashmir that this is touted to be a ₹10 crore project. He further revealed that the virtual meeting involved discussions of procuring planting material and receiving technical guidance from Japan from the same. In the first instance, Srinagar will get 2500 cherry trees. And certain suitable varieties have already been identified to put plans into action.

India To Import Plant Material From Japan

Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad stated that a 3-member team of officers will head to Japan to receive first-hand knowledge about the cherry blossom trees. After understanding this they will ensure the best plant material is imported from Japan. All this, to create this cherry blossom-themed garden in Srinagar. Currently, to witness cherry blossom-like trees, travel enthusiasts head to Sikkim for the Cherry Blossom festival. This happens every year from the months of November to March.

With Jammu & Kashmir having a lot of opportunities for floriculture activities, it’s interesting to see authorities making use of this.
