Bigg Boss 20: Kanika Mann Threw Out Her Lauki Ki Sabzi; What She Should Have Done Instead

There are bad cooking days, and then there are cooking days when your lauki gets packed into a polythene bag and sent out of the Bigg Boss kitchen as if it has personally offended the entire house. Kanika Mann appears to have experienced the latter on Bigg Boss 20.

The actress and Bigg Boss 20 contestant recently made lauki ki sabzi for the house, but the moment the contestants started tasting it, things went downhill faster than lauki usually does in a pressure cooker. The reactions were brutal, hilarious and, frankly, the kind of content reality television lives for. Nobody seemed particularly interested in finishing the sabzi, and eventually Kanika and Gullu decided there was only one solution left; put the whole thing in a polythene bag and get it out of sight.

Gullu’s description of the sabzi as something along the lines of a “maut ka lifafa” only made the situation funnier.

But wait…that lauki did not necessarily have to die that day. It could have been rescued in the Bigg Boss 20 house. 

Bigg Boss 20: First Option – Give It A Tadka 

If the problem was that the sabzi was bland, flat, or simply lacking personality, the quickest intervention would have been a proper tadka. Heat some oil or ghee, throw in jeera, hing, garlic, green chillies and dried red chillies, then add Kashmiri red chilli powder right at the end.

Pour that over the lauki and let it cook for a few minutes.

Would it have guaranteed a Michelin star? Obviously not. But there is a reason Indians believe in tadka as a form of emergency medicine.

Second Option: Lauki Kofta

If the texture had been what had everyone looking betrayed, Kanika could have stopped fighting the sabzi and changed its entire identity.

Squeeze out excess water from the cooked lauki, mix it with besan, coriander, chilli and spices, shape it into little koftas and shallow-fry them. Put those into a tomato-onion gravy and suddenly the same vegetable that had just been declared inedible has a completely different career.

Third Option: Turn It Into Raita

If the sabzi was too salty or aggressively spiced, whisked dahi could have come to the rescue.

A little roasted jeera powder, black salt, coriander and chopped green chilli could have turned the cooked lauki into a cooling raita. Serve it chilled with dal and rice and, suddenly, nobody needs to know about its troubled past.

And Then There Was Bharta

The final emergency exit; mash it. Throw the lauki into a pan with onions, tomatoes, garlic, green chillies and spices. Cook it down until the flavours come together. A squeeze of lemon at the end could add some much-needed brightness.

Would the housemates have forgiven Kanika? Maybe.

Would Gullu still have called it a “maut ka lifafa”? Unfortunately, some nicknames survive forever.

But at least the lauki could have stayed out of the polythene. Bigg Boss 20 contestants have survived nominations, ration wars, screaming matches and questionable alliances. Surely one tragic Sabzi deserved one more chance.
