Gujarat Government Plans To Redevelop Air India Crash Site Hostel In Ahmedabad
The Gujarat government is planning to redevelop the Air India crash site in Ahmedabad. They have proposed a new ₹105-crore residential complex at the BJ Medical College hostel site. As per Moneycontrol, the project will include a modern G+8 Super Speciality PG Hostel complex called ‘Atulyam 1 to 7’. It will have 236 apartments for married postgraduate doctors, studio units, a gym, canteen, recreation room, basement parking and fire safety systems. The government has already allocated ₹34.65 crore in the 2026-27 budget for the project.
However, it didn’t sit well with the crash victims’ families. Many victim families believe the site should not be treated like ordinary land. They want at least a part of the area to remain untouched as a memorial for the 260 people who lost their lives in the tragedy.

How The Families Are Reacting
As per Moneycontrol, a 32-year-old Mukti Vansadiya from Surat who lost both her parents in the Air India crash said the memorial is about giving dignity and respect to those who died. She added that compensation money alone cannot replace that respect. Mukti even said she would return the compensation if it meant her parents’ memories could be honoured properly.
Another relative of a victim, based in London, also wrote to several state and central government departments. In the letter, the family member requested that authorities not make irreversible decisions without consulting affected families. The letter described the site as a place connected to grief, memories and loss.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said that Tata Airlines will pay ₹53.12 crore to cover the damage caused to hostel blocks, a canteen, and a sub-station building. A structural audit discovered that the buildings were not safe for use anymore, and so demolition of the damaged structures has been considered necessary.
