Delhi To Amritsar In 4 Hours, Katra In 6: How The New Expressway Will Change North India Travel By 2027

Good news for daily commuters between Delhi and Chandigarh, as the travel time between the two places could soon reduce to a couple of hours with a major expressway network nearing completion. Want to know more about it? Read on!

Delhi-Chandigarh Expressway Nears Completion

The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is planned to cut travel time between the two cities from a 5-6 hour affair to a 2 hour journey. Most long stretches are expected to become operational between late 2026 and March 2027. As per a report by NDTV, this is said to be one of the largest road development projects in India and is being constructed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹38,905 crore. The expressway has been designed to support speeds of up to 120 km/h. According to the revised route plan, commuters heading from Delhi to Chandigarh will first take the Dwarka Expressway before connecting to the Urban Extension Road and the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway. Once there, vehicles will proceed to merge onto the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and then connect via the Trans-Haryana Expressway toward Ambala and Chandigarh.

In addition to Chandigarh, the expressway will substantially improve access to Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. While the Delhi to Amritsar journey will take approximately 4 hours, the Delhi to Katra travel could be reduced from nearly 14 hours to around 6 hours upon full completion of the project.

Additionally, the expressway will significantly improve access to Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. While the journey from Delhi to Amritsar will take almost 4 hours, the Delhi to Katra travel could be reduced from nearly 14 hours to around 6 hours after the project’s completion. Initially, expressway development faced delays across some Punjab segments due to issues with land acquisition and flooding in portions of Jammu & Kashmir. Even after the delays, NHAI officials have now confirmed that construction activity has recovered momentum. The corridor is now aiming for completion by March 2027.

If reports are to be believed, the network is set to transform connectivity throughout Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. Faster travel times are probably going to improve tourism and transportation. Not only this, but it will also boost industrial development while reducing traffic on existing highways.
