Desis Troll Dubai Floods, Compare It To Mumbai Rains; But Is It A Fair Comparison?

Dubai recently witnessed heavy rains and, as a result, the city saw floods. Many people took to social media to share pictures and videos of the streets of Dubai inundated with rainwater. Many people compared Dubai and Mumbai as the streets reminded many of the ‘City of Dreams’ during monsoon. However, many others were quick to point out that the comparison was unfair given the location of the UAE city.

Dubai Floods Prompt A Whirlwind Of Criticism From The Internet

According to an article which was recently published by News18, the United Arab Emirates or UAE witnessed record-breaking rainfall. In the last 24 hours alone, the amount of rainfall surpassed all records of rainfall since 1949, which is when data collection began.

As per the News18 article, the National Centre of Meteorology has already issued a red alert. Many people took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and shared videos and pictures of the flooding. The visuals were all too familiar for Mumbaikars.

Mumbai, too, witnesses heavy flooding during monsoons so many people began trolling the UAE city for their poor infrastructure. They claimed that for an advanced city, its drainage system turned out to be inadequate in the face of heavy rains.

Netizens Point Out The Unfair Comparison Between The Two Cities

However, others were quick to highlight the problem in comparing the two cities. Dubai is not at all prone to heavy rains so it makes sense that their drainage system isn’t equipped to handle heavy rains.

Mumbai, on the other hand, witnesses heavy rains every year. However, the drainage system is inadequate despite experiencing inconvenience year after year. Sanjiv Kapoor, the former CEO of Jet Airways, stated that it would be like drawing a comparison between Oslo and Mumbai.

He said that Oslo receives heavy snowfall every year but Mumbai doesn’t. Criticising Dubai for the flooding would be like criticising Mumbai for getting clogged with snow.
