Early on Sunday, a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck in the Pacific off the far eastern coast of Russia. As per the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 29 kilometres below the surface and its epicentre was about 102 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The earthquake triggered the Shiveluch volcano in the Kamchatka region as well. There have been no reports of damage or injuries so far.

Massive Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Eastern Coast

Russia’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a port city surrounded by volcanoes, felt tremors of earthquake after a massive quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck in the Pacific. This port city is near a major Russian naval base and on Sunday, people felt the powerful tremors of the earthquake here.

As per the US Geological Survey, the massive earthquake occurred 29 kilometres below the surface and its epicentre was about 102 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The initial tremors of the quake prompted a tsunami warning. However, it was later lifted.

Videos and pictures posted on social media show buildings and vehicles violently shaking due to the effects of the earthquake. Shiveluch Volcano Erupts Due To The Earthquake

Due to the massive earthquake, Russia’s Shiveluch volcano in the Kamchatka region also erupted. According to an NDTV report, ash and lava could be seen flowing out of the Shiveluch after the tremors of the earthquake subsided slightly on Sunday morning. After some visual evaluations, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that the ash column was seen “rising as high as 8 kilometres above the sea level.”

Thankfully, there have been no reports of damage or injuries so far due to this massive earthquake in Russia.
